The Chebonet Falls

Kapchorwa is ideal for nature enthusiasts. Most people know it because of Sipi Falls and long-distance runners. However, there are many other attractions in the area, and one of them is Chebonet Falls.

Chebonet Falls is a serene falls that drops at 94 metres. The Chebonet Falls is part of the river Chebonet which starts from Mount Elgon and flows over with a series of waterfalls, one of them inside Mount Elgon National Park. The clear water creates a soothing and mesmerizing sound as it falls off the Chebonet cliff.

The Chebonet Falls hike is a hike to the Chebonet waterfall in Chebonet village which is located in Kapchorwa district. It is a few miles away from the famous Sipi Falls. Chebonet Falls is lesser known but hiking up to it is harder than hiking in Sipi Falls for a lot of people.

The Chebonet water falls over a steep large orange-brown rock. Luxuriant greenery covers the long ridge. The Chebonet Falls hike offers great scenery and breathtaking views over a large area with hills, plains, valleys, and vegetation.

Chebonet Falls Hike

The Chebonet waterfalls hike is a fairly challenging hike that rewards you with great views of the Elgon and Karamoja regions. As you go to the waterfalls, you’ll encounter buildings, crop plantations, domestic animals, and local people engaging in various activities. These people are very hospitable and may say ‘hello’ to you or just wave as you pass them.

Your guide will tell you different stories about the region and its people. You’ll hear of the significance of the various physical features to the people of the Chebonet and Sipi region. As you get closer to the falls, you’ll hear the sound of the water.

You can see the falls from different sides and points. From the hill, you can hike down in order to reach the bottom of Chebonet Falls. You slope down using metallic ladders erected to the ground. They are very sturdy and safe, with a handrail to hold on to. You’ll cross the river via a small wooded bridge and continue until you reach the bottom of the falls.

Admire the falls, enjoy the sounds, and take great photos and videos. The best thing about this hike is you can enjoy it whether you’re traveling alone or with groups. Our adventurous guides will ensure you have a great and fun experience.

The return is challenging for most people since you have to hike up a steep slope. Moreover, you’ll be already tired from the initial journey. But after resting for a while, you’ll be able to undertake it easily. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable hiking shoes that fit well, so you don’t kill your feet.

Listen to stories

Listen to the interesting stories as told by our guides. Most of the stories will be related to the people and the physical features. One of the interesting features is a rock called devil’s rock. Karamojong cattle rustlers would hide behind it in order to spy on the natives of Chebonet before going to steal their cows. Eventually the people of Chebonet decided to focus on crops which were not highly desired by the rustlers from the plains.
