4-Day Mount Elgon Sipi-Bushiyi Traverse:
The Cross-Mountain Sprint

Mount Elgon Caldera Hike

If you want to experience the full ecological diversity of Mount Elgon trekking but only have four days, this is your route. The Sipi-Bushiyi Trail is a spectacular “traverse” route. Unlike standard treks that return the way they came, this expedition starts at the iconic Kapkwai/Sipi Trailhead (2,050m) and crosses the entire mountain to finish at the Bushiyi Ranger Post (1,700m). You’ll see two completely different sides of the mountain, from the misty northern waterfalls to the vibrant southern Gishu farmlands.

Route Highlights

  • Efficient Acclimatization: Starting at Sipi allows for a more gradual introduction to the altitude than the steep Sasa trail.
  • Dual-Trail Experience: Experience the gentle, scenic Sipi trail and the rugged, authentic Bushiyi trail in one journey.
  • High-Altitude Diversity: Trek through montane forest, bamboo zones, and the prehistoric Afro-alpine moorlands.

Detailed 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Sipi Trailhead (2,050m) to Kajeri Camp (3,050m)

This is a “power day” to get you deep into the wilderness. We start at the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, hiking through thick montane forest. We stop for a well-earned lunch at the historic Tutum Cave, a massive lava shelter. By evening, we reach Kajeri Camp, perched on a ridge with views of the plains below.

  • Distance: ~24 km
  • Time: 7–9 hours
  • Elevation Gain: +1,000m
  • Vibe: A challenging but rewarding first day in the forest.

Day 2: Kajeri Camp to Simu Valley Camp (3,800m)

The landscape shifts dramatically today. We leave the forest behind and enter the heath and moorland zones. You’ll be surrounded by the iconic Giant Lobelias and “Everlasting Flowers.” Simu Valley Camp is one of the most scenic spots on the mountain, nestled near alpine streams.

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Time: 6–7 hours
  • Landscape: Transition to high-altitude Afro-alpine moorland.

Day 3: Summit Day – Wagagai Peak (4,321m) to Dubi Camp (3,600m)

Today we conquer the summit. A steady climb leads us to the rim of the world’s largest volcanic caldera before we reach Wagagai Peak (4,321m). After celebrating at the highest point of Mount Elgon, we begin our descent on the “Bushiyi side,” camping at Dubi Camp with panoramic views of the Bududa valleys.

  • Distance: 14–15 km
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: +521m / -721m
  • Achievement: Standing on the roof of Mount Elgon!

Day 4: Dubi Camp to Bushiyi Trailhead (1,700m)

Our final day is a long descent through the bamboo zone and fertile farmlands. We stop for a quick lunch at Shilonko Camp before the final push to the Bushiyi Ranger Post. You’ll be greeted by the warm culture of the Bagisu people as you complete your trans-mountain journey.

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Elevation Loss: -1,900m (A test for the knees—trekking poles are highly recommended!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the 4-day Sipi-Bushiyi trek difficult? A: This is a strenuous trek, particularly Day 1, which covers 24km. It is designed for fit hikers who want to see as much of the mountain as possible in a short time.

Q: What is the benefit of a “traverse” route on Mount Elgon? A: A traverse allows you to see two different ecosystems. You start in the lush forest of the Sipi side and end in the culturally rich farmlands of the Bushiyi side, rather than seeing the same scenery twice on a return route.

Q: Do I need trekking poles for the Bushiyi descent? A: Yes! The descent on Day 4 drops nearly 1,900 meters. Trekking poles are highly recommended to protect your knees during the steep sections.
